Why are libraries getting rid of OverDrive? ›

Discontinuing the OverDrive app allows our development teams to focus their efforts on Libby. We also want to make it as easy a possible to promote your digital library to your users. Having one app simplifies how you train your users, answer questions, and stay up to date with changes.

The OverDrive app for iOS, Android, and Windows 8/10 was discontinued on May 1, 2023 and is replaced by Libby. The OverDrive app for Kindle Fire devices will be discontinued June 7, 2023. You can install Libby from the Amazon Appstore on compatible Fire tablets.

Sign into your library's OverDrive website with your library card (find the Sign in button under , if needed). ) to see books you've already borrowed. Tap Download for the borrowed book. If prompted, enter a free Adobe ID to complete the download.

Go to Overdrive to find an eBook. Find the eBook you want to read and click Borrow. Login with your library card number when prompted and Borrow the book. Download the book to your computer and read it with Adobe Digital Editions.

Which app should I use? If you use one iOS or Android device to browse, download, and read or listen to digital books, we recommend trying Libby. It's a great one-device experience. If you like to read books on many devices, or prefer to browse for new titles on your computer, stick with the OverDrive app for now.

Libby is built by OverDrive, who also developed the legacy OverDrive app. Libby features the same free digital content from your library that you may have enjoyed in the OverDrive app. However, Libby was designed to make finding, borrowing, and enjoying free digital titles easier than ever.

For patrons who use the legacy OverDrive app on their desktop computer to download eAudiobooks and transfer them to MP3 players; this software will remain for those who have already downloaded it and are using it.

Libby is the newer library reading app by OverDrive, loved by millions of readers worldwide!

Yes, your current loans and holds from the OverDrive app will be added to Libby as soon as you add your library card. Note: Reading progress and bookmarks from the OverDrive app won't sync to Libby when you switch.

You can borrow eBooks and eAudiobooks from Overdrive or Libby for 7 days, 14 days, or 21 days. It's your choice! You can also set a default lending period for all items in a given format.

Can you still download OverDrive? ›

Upgrade to Libby. On May 1, 2023, the OverDrive app was discontinued. We encourage you to make the switch to Libby, our newer reading app. Libby is made by the same people, with the same goal of connecting you to your library and to your favorite books, audiobooks, and magazines.

Even if you create an OverDrive account, you'll still need a library card to sign into your library and borrow digital titles.

Not all books found in the public library are available with OverDrive. The library book must also be sold on Kobo.com. If you find a book in your library that isn't sold by Kobo, you'll need to use Adobe Digital Editions to add the file onto your eReader.

How do I start using OverDrive Read? To get started, open your web browser and borrow a title that's available in the OverDrive Read format from your library's OverDrive website. Then, click or tap the Read now in browser button to begin reading it immediately using OverDrive Read.

OverDrive is a free service offered by Emory Libraries that lets you borrow e-books and audiobooks. You can enjoy titles directly in a browser or download and use the OverDrive app on Android, Chromebooks, iOS, Fire tablets, and Windows 8/10. See the sidebar for instructions.

Your library doesn't have a digital collection with OverDrive (the developers of Libby). If you can't find your public library via Libby's search, we recommend that you contact your library to let them know you're interested in using OverDrive's services, including Libby.

The OverDrive app will be replaced with the Libby app to manage your content. In the weeks before the OverDrive app is discontinued, you'll see a final notice reminding you to upgrade to Libby.
